From Concept To Skin: The Joys & Tribulations Of Tattooing Script - Inked By Mario RJ Corbin

Fun With Script - Old Newspaper Type Font
Tattooing script, any script, has been quite a challenge and I have found myself turning away clients who wanted certain fonts (e.g. Calibri or Times New Roman). My first venture in tattooing script professionally was with a very patient and kind young woman, Ms Méthot. My family and I had met her at La Maison du Cinéma where she works. She already has an assortment of eclectic tattoos and has actually had apprentices tattoo her before. So she didn't seem the least bit hesitant or worried when we met three weeks ago for her first tattoo session. Armed with a friend, Jennifer, she braved having the letters Representamen and Iconicity tattooed on her forearms by yours truly. Today we also tattooed the words Therefore and Chrysalis on the back of her arms just above her elbows. The experience was, all said and done, both terrifying and mixed with a profound sense of relief that it is over and that it came out fine. Not least because I originally screwed up the first session with one of two fonts that was chosen.

When at first you don't succeed...
Tattooing script leaves absolutely zero room for screwing up. So when Audrey arrived three weeks ago with a request to add two more letters to the mix but in a font other than the Old Newspaper Type, I was panic stricken. The style requested was similar to Times New Roman, only a bit thicker. I should have refused right on the spot, but my inexperience dealing with clients in this way kicked in and I gave it a try regardless. The letter e and the letter n of Representamen was completed in seconds and it took even less time for me to realize that there was just no way that I was going to be able to pull it off. I stopped, took responsibility for fucking up and asked her if she would allow me to fix my mistake by going back to the original font. Luckily she was very patient and as I said, very kind and agreed. The end result is, well, what you see in the above picture.

I managed to actually fix my mistake quite nicely and you would never know that those two letters in that word was a cover up. The second word, Iconicity, was completed on the same day and happily, three weeks later, they both look pretty good. It took me much more time than it should have to complete them both but truthfully, I couldn't bear the thought of making any more mistakes so took my time and made sure that she was comfortable and happy. In that same session, I also freshened up some finger tattoos that my client had and added a few extra little markings/designs. However, as you might have guessed, much of what was done has since disappeared. I didn't want to go too deep and many of the areas themselves just don't hold ink very well. Suffice it to say, I did not charge Audrey for the first session as the lessons learned were worth more to me.

I am...
Today's tattoos were completed in much less time, although, longer than it probably should have been. However, slow and steady wins the race or in this case, keeps customers happy. Not wanting a repeat from last time, I was relieved that the size of the words would be slightly larger and that the font itself is the same. The tattoo above the word Therefore is not my work, but as you can see, one would think the word Therefore had always been intended for that spot beneath it.

Look it up...
The word Chrysalis was placed on the opposite arm where Therefore is located. Audrey has plans of having a similarly sized tattoo (like the one on her right arm) to be done above this word in future. Overall, given everything that I experienced, including the aforementioned invaluable lessons learned, I am quite pleased with the end result. There is always room for improvement of course and I know I need to keep practicing script in particular. As it stands, I am only agreeing to do script that is both forgiving and generally larger than your regular font. has many examples of scripts that I would both love and hate to do. If you are also an apprentice my advice would be to trust in yourself and know your limits. It's not to say that I won't be able to do more complex fonts in future, it just means that I am not ready to tackle them yet. The most important thing is that Audrey is very happy with her tattoos. Clients like her make it all the more important to keep working hard and improving upon oneself. They deserve nothing but the best.
