Fun With Todd Beck's Leg - Tattooing My Mentor Part Deux!

Coal Miner Tattoo - Inked By Mario RJ Corbin
When I first popped my cherry and tattooed Todd Beck's leg last year, admittedly the whole experience was nerve racking. Fast forward nearly a year later and honestly, I was every bit as nervous as the first time when it came to tattoo my mentor's leg again. His lower half leg sleeve is still as eclectic as always and I was thrilled to have the chance regardless of the butterflies in my stomach. He put together several designs that he wanted me to do including the coal miner skull above, a reminder of a rugby team from his home in New Zealand. He also put together a Maori inspired rendition of New Zealand itself. The latter in particular proved to be the trickier of the two designs.

Todd's Rendition Of New Zealand
Stencils have been the bane of my existence as of late. Today was no exception as I found myself spending more time redrawing parts of the tattoo by hand as a result of the stencil coming off too easily. This is despite being allowed to warm up for ages and setting it to Deepness II. Maybe Crystal-Marie is onto something when she suggested a thermal printer. In any case, the purpose of today's exercise was to see how I was doing with my line work in general. Whilst I am quite pleased with the coal miner itself, I found the second tattoo of New Zealand more taxing. There is always room for improvement in anything and everything that I do. In short, if you are an apprentice, don't rely on the stencil fax. If you ever wondered why drawing is important, remember that you will undoubtedly have to recreate parts of your stencil with a sharpie or similar by eye as there is almost always no chance of being able to reapply the stencil. Take your time, be patient, and most importantly, have fun.
